DeadBat Gets Shirty: Part 2 – Away, Third & Change

Following on from last week’s first in a new series…I present the second and final part in this erm…short-lived series (no, I do not own goalkeeping shirts or tracksuits). This week I delve into my suitcases and sports holdalls, rating and slating every Sheffield United shirt worn as an Away, Third or Change kit.

I begin this stroll down memory lane around the 1970 point. United have had most colours you could think of for a change strip; white and yellow seem to the favoured colours and it’s evident we have a penchant nay obsession with the fluorescent piece. There are beauts and shockers amongst them…anyway, without further ado let’s get on with it…

20180805_202429
1970 -1975 (?)  / No sponsor / Make unknown

Description: White away shirt. Classic red collar and badge. Simple but one of the best we have ever had. Sadly one of the main memories of it is George Best surging past man after man to score but we won many games in this too!

Players it makes me think of: Badger, Hockey, Hemsley

Mark: 8.5/10

1975

1975 (?) -77 (?)   / No sponsor / Make: Admiral

Description: White shirt with two red sashes with black trim that makes it look like there is a white sash as the main stripe. Should not work but does. Lovely looking kit and like the shorts too. Is a bit too close to our home colours so not sure we would get away with this now. Not quite sure on the dates for this kit and when it was worn so a bit of an estimate?

Players it makes me think of: Jimmy Johnstone, Cliff Calvert, Tony Field (above)

Mark: 8/10

20180805_202543

1977 – 79   / No sponsor / Admiral

Description: Yellow shirt with Black chevrons. This was a very underrated United kit. It was similar to the West Ham and others of the time that Admiral made with the chevrons. A smart kit that was forgotten as much due to the sinking side that wore it. Another recently been remade and already stashed in my kit case!

Players it makes me think of: McGeady, Guthrie, Stainrod

Mark: 7.5/10

20180805_202644

1978 – 79   / No sponsor / Admiral

Description: White shirt with Black side stripe and red trim. Like this shirt. It was not worn much and seemed another change kit over the same period as the yellow chevron kit. Seeing pictures of the silky Sabella always gives it more kudos too. Recently been remade and a lovely purchase.

Players it makes me think of: Sabella, Garner, Franks

Mark: 7.5/10

Players it makes me think of: Sabella, Garner, Franks

1981-1983

38544461_149454395941984_803228857959186432_n

1979 -81   / Sponsor: Cantors / Make: Hobot

Description: White shirt with some black and red trim. Fairly basic first attempt from Hobot. A fair bit of red and black trim on the sleeves but rest of kit exclusively white. Nothing to write home about really this one.

Players it makes me think of: Mathews, Speight, Hamson

Mark: 6/10

1979-1981  / Sponsor: Cantors / Make: Hobot

Description: As above. Exactly the same as above but a yellow version with red and black trim. Should work as yellow with those colours as the trim is kind of what you want but like the white kit not sure it quite works. Not simple enough but not enough originality either.

Players it makes me think of: Benjamin, Verde, Wiggan

Mark: 6/10

20180805_2027241981-1983  / Sponsor: Renault/Bentleys / Make : Hobot

Description: Yellow and Brown stripes. It sounds horrible. It was amazing and still is. As with the home shirt, the little blades logos were in the stripes. It somehow just worked. It is a classic and still seen as one of the great United shirts of its time – retro hats and scarves sum up its popularity still to this day.

Players it makes me think of: Morris, Houston, Kenworthy

Mark: 9/10

Capture1983-1986  / Sponsor: Simmonds / Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: Yellow shiny shirt with the shadow piping effects. A lovely shirt that had the nice mix of red in it too. One of the more underrated shirts we have had a change kit. We have not done enough simple yellow and red combos in recent years. Another one I have never got hold of but another I probably had as a child!

Players it makes me think of: Arnott, Kenworthy, Philliskirk

Mark: 8/10

20180805_2029411986-1989  / Sponsor: Simmonds / Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: Yellow shirt that had the odd red and white block on the shoulder/sleeve. It was not amazing to look at but become a cult shirt (reproduced recently of course) and incredibly difficult to get hold of.

Players it makes me think of: Todd, Beagrie, Withe

Mark: 7.5/10

20180805_203055

1989-1991  / Sponsor: Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: ‘The’ away shirt. Been many fluorescent shirts since from lots of clubs but this was groundbreaking at the time. Cross between yellow and green; it was an incredible shirt. Stood out so much that some clubs complained it clashed with the steward. A design so unique that saw it break records in sales. We were really successful under it and summed up a tremendous era under Dave Bassett. Wore it in the great promotion game at Leicester and the game we sealed safety at QPR just under a year later.

Players it makes me think of: Rostron, Wood, Jones

Mark: 9.5/10

A one off…

1989-1991  / Sponsor: Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: White shirt we wore for one game at Sunderland. Not sure the story was why we wore it? Quite basic and not the best looking – looked like it was off a market stall. We had a 100% record in it. Can’t even find a picture of it on the net but I am sure I could dig out an old programme. Glynn Hodges nutted Gordon Armstrong in this game to get a rather harsh red card in my opinion. Bryson scored off a post after intercepting a back pass. A crucial win.

Players it makes me think of: Gannon, Hodges, Bryson

Mark: 5/10

20180805_203319.jpg1991-1993  / Sponsor: Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: Yellow. Not quite as eye-catching as the previous but a nice shirt all the same. The flecks on the sleeve actually added to it. First away shirt you could buy with the sponsor on it. A decent effort that was always going to be tough to follow a classic.

Players it makes me think of: Lake, Beesley, Barnes

Mark: 7.5/10

1991-1993  / Sponsor: Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro20180805_203208

Description: White. Same as the away kit but white. Had same flashes on the shoulder and a nice red collar. Lovely shirt. We had two superb change kits this time. They wore this with black shorts and red. Both worked actually.

Players it makes me think of: Hartfield, Mendonca, Hill

Mark: 8/10

20180805_203400.jpg1993-1995  / Sponsor: Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: Blue with a Purple and Green diagonal sash. It was not a bad shirt alone but not a United shirt and to have blue? Makes me think of going down also.

Players it makes me think of: Rogers, Cowan, Carr

Mark: 3.5/10

20180805_203441.jpg1993-1995  / Sponsor: Arnold Laver / Make: Umbro

Description: Green. We had this as an extra shirt. I quite liked this. We have not had a shirt like it since. It was far nicer than the blue version. Blue collar not so good though. Seemed to have an obsession with trying unusual colours after white or yellow shirt previously.

Players it makes me think of: Falconer, Tuttle, Scott

Mark: 6/10

20180805_203529.jpg1995-1997  / Sponsor: Wards / Make: Avec

Description: Purple and Yellow halves. Awful hybrid and part of the worst set of kits United had when combined with the home kit. It had Avec logos all over it too. Just an awful strip.

Players it makes me think of: Whitehouse, Vonk, Heath

Mark: 2.5/10

20180805_2036241997-1999  / Sponsor: Wards / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: White kit. Odd itchy material and also we wore it for the Playoff final defeat but it was a lovely kit to look at and one that we then did well whilst wearing in the next season but just makes me hear the word, ‘Hopkin….looking to curl one!’

Players it makes me think of: Tiler, Spackman, Dellas (and Hopkin!)

Mark: 7.5/10

20180805_203711.jpg1998-2000  / Sponsor: Wards/BladesUnited / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: Bright yellow/green. Tried to recreate the classic from the early 90’s. It had black sleeves and not sure this one quite worked and was more green than yellow. Makes me think of the Arsenal FA Cup controversy.

Players it makes me think of: Marcelo, Woodhouse, Saunders

Mark: 7/10

20180805_203756.jpg1999-2000  / Sponsor: BladesUnited / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: A white kit that the colour combinations should work but it did not. Almost the same as the home kit without the stripes. Had the same BladesUnited cheap logo. Awful red stripes down the side too.

Players it makes me think of: Ribeiro, Hunt, Quinn

Mark: 4/10

20180805_203906.jpg

2000-2002  / Sponsor: Midas Games / Make: Patrick

Description: Gold and Lilac. We have a contender for the worst kit here. It was hideous. It was clearly linked to colours of sponsor Midas Games. Remember a really homophobic article in The Sun detailing its connotations and mentioned Marcus Bent!

Players it makes me think of: Bent, Curle, Kelly

Mark: 3/10

20180805_2040142000-2002  / Sponsor: Midas Games / Make: Patrick

Description: White. Better than the away kit! Had odd black horizontal stripes on the shoulder and was not an amazing kit. White and black should work but this one did not really.

Players it makes me think of: Doane, Suffo, Asaba

Mark: 5/10

Blue!

20180805_204059.jpg2002-2004/ Sponsor: Desun / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: Blue kit. An all blue kit! It was very dark, almost black and do you know what; it was a nice kit but again the blue connotations did not help at all. However, I will be controversial and say of all the unusual kit colours we have had; this was one of the better ones.

Players it makes me think of: Windass, Page, Ndlovu

Mark: 6.5/10

20180805_2041422003-2005/ Sponsor: Desun / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: White kit with large red blocks under the arms and near the collar. The black shorts do not really work – may have been better with red or white. It probably was a bit too close to a home kit to work with too much red on it. White kits need to be mainly white for me with less trim the better.

Players it makes me think of: Allison, Forte, Whitlow

Mark: 6/10

20180805_204232.jpg2004-2006  / Sponsor: HFS Loans / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: A bright Orange affair. Again makes me think of Arsenal in the Cup when we got a late draw. Very bright but not sure I associate Orange with United in any way. It was striking but not sure it totally worked.

Players it makes me think of: Cullip, Harley, Cadamarteri

Mark: 6/10

20180805_2043042005-2007  / Sponsor: HFS Loans / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: A white kit but one we associate with the promotion. It had black down the sides and under the sleeves. A bit better than the previous white one but again had too much going on for me.

Players it makes me think of: Short, Kozluk, Ifil

Mark: 7/10

20180805_2043362006-2007  / Sponsor: Capital One / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: Black and White stripes. Odd that we went with this. A bold move but again not sure it works. Do not associate this combination with us. Too much like the home kit and our awful away form in the Premier League did not help. Did we even win in this kit even? Recall winning at Wigan and Watford in red and white.

Players it makes me think of: Fathi, Davies, Stead

Mark: 4/10

20180805_204407

2007-08 / Sponsor: Capital One / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: Another attempt to recreate the classic day glow yellow shirt. Does not quite work again and has too much black on it and again seems as near to green than yellow.

Players it makes me think of: Cahill, Bardsley, Speed

Mark: 7/10

The formative ‘Visit Malta’ Years

20180805_2044592008-09 / Sponsor: Visit Malta / Make: Le Coq Sportif

Description: A black shirt and all black kit but the sponsor is clumsily picked out in a white block. Some strange sash’s in white, red and silver all over the kit and they do not help it. As with white kits, if you do a simple colour better to put less other stuff on it.

Players it makes me think of: Halford, Naughton, Howard

Mark: 6/10

20180805_2045312009-10 / Sponsor: Visit Malta / Make: Macron

Description: A white away kit with a red stripe down the side. Too much red on it and those awful macron logos do not help. The red and white hooped socks might be the best thing about this kit.

Players it makes me think of: Camara, Little, Nosworthy

Mark: 5/10

20180805_204653.jpg

Description: The special kit to celebrate the 120th anniversary. It has all the players that played for United embodied into it. Was given away free to all season ticket holders. Not sure I have ever worn it. Ugly big silver blocks down the side. A good idea but not a great shirt sadly.

Players it makes me think of: Did we ever wear this?

Mark: 6/10

20180805_2046112009-10 / Sponsor: Visit Malta / Make: Macron

Description: A silver kit with bright green trim that we never wore. I am not sure it even went on sale. I have a version somehow though. Silver and bright green did not work and the fact the team never wore it says a lot.

Players it makes me think of: Noone

Mark: 4/10

20180805_2047312010-11 / Sponsor: Visit Malta / Make: Macron

Description: A black kit with red pinstripes. Quite liked this kit. It goes against what I have said about these sort of kits needing to be plain but I feel this works and one of the more underrated kits in United’s change/away history. Sadly associated with relegation.

Players it makes me think of: Bogdanovic, Britton, Calve

Mark: 7.5/10

20180805_2048532011-12 / Sponsor: Westfield Health / Make: Macron

Description: A yellow kit with black trim. I think yellow works better with red for us. The sleeves with black on do not work and the big VW logo in blue does not help.

Players it makes me think of: Lescinel Francois, Phillips, Flynn

Mark: 5/10

20180805_2050322012-13 / Sponsor: Redtooth/ Make: Macron

Description: Black with an orange sash running diagonally against it. Did not like this kit at all. There are orange bits on the shoulders and then the shorts look quite tacky. Poor kit. Macron made some nice home kits but away kits were poor throughout their tenure save for the one below.

Players it makes me think of: Cofie, Ironside, Westlake

Mark: 4.5/10

20180805_2049512012-13 / Sponsor: Redtooth/ Make: Macron

Description: White kit that was very basic and this works well. Macron’s best away kit for me for United. Simple and I liked the fact the collar was white too. Just lose the macron signs on the sleeves and it could be even better.

Players it makes me think of: Blackman, McMahon, Williams

Mark: 7.5/10

20180805_2051082013-14 / Sponsor: Top Spring/ Make: Macron

Description:  Yellow and Green. Looked like a Norwich kit. Recall seeing this at York in a friendly and instantly hated it. Looks as bad now as it did then. Had the shadow stripes but the green and white v neck, the sponsor with things going on all over and the yellow waistband on the shorts. I could go on.

Players it makes me think of: Taylor, Cuvelier, Coady

Mark: 4/10

The Adidas Years

20180805_2053302014-15 / Sponsor: John Holland / Make: Adidas

Description: A Black kit that has white trim on it. Adidas’ first away kit for us. A bit meh. If they did not have the white on it; it would look much better.

Players it makes me think of: Campbell Ryce, Alcock, McNulty

Mark: 6.5/10

20180805_2052352014-15 / Sponsor: Top Spring / Make: Adidas

Description: Yellow and Black trim. It was a template and a kit that had been used by Livingston a few years previous. Having another team’s cast-off design never helps. Not a good kit and bad memories of the play off game at Swindon.

Players it makes me think of: Baxter, Murphy, McNulty

Mark: 5/10

20180805_2054042015-16 / Sponsor: John Holland / Make: Adidas

Description:  Another bright version of the bright early 90’s kit. They keep ramming them down our throats. Like the other versions we had – it does not have the panache or originality and again closer to green and got too much black on rather than red.

Players it makes me think of: Adams, Reed, Sammon

Mark: 6/10

20180805_205445.jpg2016-17 / Sponsor: Alpharooms / Make: Adidas

Description:  A promotion kit. Black with orange pinstripes. I prefer the Black and red pinstripe version of a few years previously. Not sure orange shorts works. Good memories of the kit of course but as a combination not for me

Players it makes me think of: Basham, Lavery, Hanson

Mark: 5.5/10

sheffield_united_2017_18_adidas_away_kit_a

2017-18 / Sponsor: Teletext Holidays / Make: Adidas

Description:  Purple is seen on a United kit again but this time a solid version and seems a clear link with the sponsor. Not a colour that I would want to see on a United kit. The home kit is great – the away kit does not work. Fortunately, a decent alternate change was brought in.

Players it makes me think of: Stearman, Donaldson, Carruthers

Mark: 4/10

20180805_2055262017-18 / Sponsor: Teletext Holidays / Make: Adidas

Description: A lovely kit. Only 500 made for fans which is a shame. Not been the luckiest of kits with results but it is really nice. This should be the away kit. This combined with the home kit might be the nicest pair of kits we have had for a long, long time.

Players it makes me think of: Duffy, Brooks, Stevens

Mark: 8/10

Finally…

sheffield_united_18_19_adidas_away_kit_a2018-19 / Sponsor: Ramsdens / Make: Adidas

Description: For the 5th time we tried a bright yellow/green kit. Might be the poorest since the original. This one is not really fluorescent though and it is a template shirt rather than anything original. It is a bit of a lazy effort from Adidas. It has black rather than red which as you can tell annoys me as you can tell! Nothing remarkable. Rather a nice clean yellow (not even as bright) shirt and shorts with red trim all along it. Other than white change kits of recent years I am struggling to think of many good change kits we have had in recent years.

Players it makes me think of: Lundstram, Norrington Davies, McGoldrick

Mark: 6/10

So the marks are in…

Deadbat presents the best and worst

Best away kit

1) The luminous bright yellow kit from 1990-92. Like nothing we had seen before. Associated with success and summed up the era early 90’s really well. A classic. No point in trying to recreate it as we have many times.

2) The yellow and brown from the fourth division title side is novel and another associated with a great season.

3) The early 70’s away kit. Plain white with red round collar and the classic red numbers. Simple but great.

Worst away kit

1) Purple and yellow halves Avec kit of mid 90’s. Dreadful. Worst set of kits United have ever had

2) Gold and lilac kit we wore under Warnock.

3) Blue with purple and green diagonal sash. Just pips the black and white stripes. Both worn in relegation seasons.
